Tech Tools in Action—Examples from the Studio #2

To mark the recent transition from school year to summer session, I decided to frame this year’s summer lessons for all of my students around the broad subject of bow technique. As a focal point, I’m using video material recorded in 1978 by the legendary cello teacher, Leonard Rose. Three months ago one of Mr. Rose’s students, Steven Honigberg , shared the video with the cello world by uploading it to YouTube. To help me and my students navigate this rather long video, I used Evernote to sort the video by topic, adding notated exercises and etudes demonstrated by Mr. Rose in the video. For easy student access I then linked the Evernote note directly from my website, in addition to copying it to individual students’ Evernote notebooks. In lessons, my students and I have been watching and discussing selected sections of the video, and working on the bow technique approaches and exercise demonstrated by Mr. Rose. So far, this approach has provided a welcome change of pace, as well as effectively focusing attention on vital technical fundamentals. I'm sure this won't be the last time I'll be weaving together these tools—YouTube, Evernote and my studio website—to create an integrated curriculum module for my students.

The "Lab Techs" are faculty who are available for one on one training and have shown a bunch of MacPhail faculty how to use Evernote in their teaching.

Each teacher shows their own students how to use Evernote. The trick is getting the student (and usually their parent) to establish a work flow at home that involves checking Evernote each week. So in other words, making sure it's readily accessible on an iPad,iphone, or laptop so they will check it easily.

I think Evernote has a lot of potential. Is there anyone who has done training to teach both the teachers and the students how to use it well?
